Amazon Wallet, Amazon's entry into the growing mobile wallet industry, has been discontinued after only being on the market since July.

The app stored loyalty and gift cards in digital wallets on Android and Fire phones. But unlike other mobile wallets, Amazon Wallet did not allow users to manage debit or credit cards.

Amazon emailed its Wallet users saying the app would be discontinued. The links to Amazon Wallet on the Amazon app store as well as the Google Play store have been deactivated.

"We've learned a great deal from the Amazon Wallet beta program and will look for ways to apply these lessons in the future as we continue to innovate on behalf of our customers," Amazon spokesman Tom Cook said in a statement.

Amazon did not say whether it would revisit the concept of smartphone payments in the future.

The mobile wallet industry is left with two major players, Apple and Google, as well as many other smaller companies. Rumors surfaced earlier this week that Google may purchase Softcard and combine their efforts in the mobile wallet category. This may give Google some additional resources to be able to compete against Apple Pay.
